When Bread is Victory

We have delivered 360 kilos of flour to feed 30 families in Gaza

“We are able to get flour. Whatever money you have, send it to us and we will buy flour with it. The thing is, hurry up and give it to us today or tomorrow, because it is life or death now.”

This is the message that Anas sent to his friend at the Sun of Freedom, the organization that supports Anas and his endeavors in Gaza.

We began working with Anas a few months ago and shared the incredible story of “one of the worlds strongest men.” The professional wheelchair basketball player whose life mission transformed from representing Palestine on the global stage to saving the lives of Palestinians has become one of our role models as we work to support Palestinians.

“We can distribute flour to families, perhaps 30 families. Each family will get 20 kilos of flour.”

This would represent a week or two worth of food for these families. The cost? $5000.00 USD

Individual bags of flour are running as high as $500.00 USD in Gaza right now since Israel completely blocked off all aid.

But the reality is that we have to pay that price. There are families with children who at that point hadn't eaten in days.

The Elham fund has been planning on becoming both a direct relief organization and also a grant donating agency in our efforts to maximize our ability to help people on the ground. This emergency request became our first test.

Nothing clarifies a group of people like an immediate crisis. The entire team of the Elham Fund moved quickly to send $5000.00 to secure emergency flour for 30 starving families.

There is nothing that I have seen in this world more beautiful than a smiling child holding a bag of flour.

Anas was somehow also able to get access to water trucks that he was also able to get with the help of funding from the Elham Fund.

In the midst of genocide we have to count our victories and be grateful for them. Every single day that Palestinians eat is a day that they can continue to resist ethnic cleansing. So that means that receiving flour is a victory. Making bread for children is a victory.

Feeding these beautiful children could not have happened without your help. Your donations and caring made it possible for us to make this possible. Each and every person that donated to the Elham Fund should take credit for saving lives this week.

We are incredibly grateful to the Sun of Freedom and to Anas Mushtaha for his strength and heart. Anas has become our role model for courage in the face of evil. He does not have the luxury of falling into despair against the forces that are committing genocide so he fights. He fights by surviving and by helping others survive.

During this year and a half we have seen incredibly bright lights fighting against the darkness. A battle requires many kinds of fighters. Medics, Cooks, teachers, journalists all play a role in fighting against the forces that would destroy Palestine and the memory of Palestine.

You have been one of those lights fighting for humanity.
